The frost king will burn.
Seventeen-year-old Ruby is a Fireblood who has concealed her powers of heat and flame from the cruel Frostblood ruling class her entire life. But when her mother is killed trying to protect her, and rebel Frostbloods demand her help to overthrow their bloodthirsty king, she agrees to come out of hiding, desperate to have her revenge.
Despite her unpredictable abilities, Ruby trains with the rebels and the infuriating—yet irresistible—Arcus, who seems to think of her as nothing more than a weapon. But before they can take action, Ruby is captured and forced to compete in the king’s tournaments that pit Fireblood prisoners against Frostblood champions. Now she has only one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who has taken everything from her—and from the icy young man she has come to love.
Ruby, a Fireblood living in a dangerous world ruled by the cruel and corrupted Frost King, must draw all her strength to survive the blistering cold of Tempesia. After her mother is killed by the king’s guards, Ruby is imprisoned for being a Fireblood. Rescued, she must train vigorously, control her fire and take her vengeance. But with the seductive lure of the throne’s Minax, Ruby must find her light before she’s consumed by darkness.
Part one, although a little slow at times, was never boring. After being rescued from prison, Ruby began training with Brother Thistle a master with skill in frost. Though it is Arcus, a young, hooded Frostblood who pushed Ruby’s fire to its limits. Arcus has many secrets behind his burns, but it’s those ice-blue eyes that interest Ruby. Training and teaching Ruby to harness her gift and fight with a sword, Arcus’ heart began to thaw. Nevertheless, relations between fire and frost never end well. . .
Part two of this book was exceptional. I never expected to read a fantasy world that combines gladiator battles with mythical beasts and powerful champions who possess gifts of frost or fire. Ruby is the first Fireblood to ever will a battle in the arena but it wasn’t sheer luck. A darkness consumed her, turning her world to black and white. Losing her empathy and emotion, Ruby only craved power; that is, until she regained control. How long will it take for Ruby to surrender?
Elly Blake’s impressive first book was both powerful and enchanting. From the opening pages, I was absorbed in the world of Tempesia. A dangerous, ruthless and unforgiving story that will leave you wanting more.
